PUPPETS & PRAISES was formed in 1990. Peter & Mark met whilst working on the television series "The Antics Road Show" which Peter wrote, produced and directed and Mark acted & sang in. Peter was doing a puppet show in Lancashire churches and asked Mark to accompany him as the church musician available was often unable to play his rock & roll songs. This developed into "Puppets & Praises".
Paul Heritage joined them after they had done a show at the Liverpool school where Paul was teaching. The group does regular 'Nativity' tours in the North West where their unusual mixture of puppetry and rocky songs have made them an essential part of some schools' Christmas activities. The band have also appeared at The Greenbelt Arts Festival, The Royal Festival Hall, Cadbury's World - and churches and schools in many parts of the United Kingdom & the Channel Isles.
Some of their songs can be found on a CD, "Puppets & Praises - The Album", available on request priced £7 + 50p. postage & packing. All income from album sales goes to CASA ALIANZA, a charity working for street children in Guatemala & Honduras. Sketches with the puppets include: "Round the back" (based on the book "Jesus' Birthday Party" by Nicholas Allen) "Heaven" (also adapted from a book by Nicholas Allan) "Junk Nativity" (the Christmas story told by wooden spoon puppets) "Little Star's Big Night Out" (a Christmas story by Peter Charlton) "The Easy Way" (a sketch for Lent) "Mother's Day" (for Mothering Sunday) A number of songs are also illustrated by puppetry, including: "The Ballad of Frank the Tank" (a hard man discovers forgiveness) "Something in the city" (appearances can deceive) "Come dance with me" (Jesus recruits a few disciples!) A popular member of the group is THOMAS, a seven year old (puppet), given to philosophical utterances and support for 'Spurs'!
